Apple Magic Mouse drivers for Windows

July 13th, 2010

Revision History

13-Jul-2010: Original Article.
15-Jul-2010: Minor fixes to Step 2 and additions to Notes.
04-Jan-2010: Update for Boot Camp 3.3.

Introduction

You’ve probably come here because you have an Apple Magic Mouse and want to get the latest drivers for Windows. They’re not officially supported on Windows, but Apple does include drivers in their Boot Camp driver updates (presumably for use on Macs).

Originally, the site Uneasy Silence published some drivers they had extracted from the Boot Camp packages, but haven’t updated them and haven’t documented exactly how they did it.

There have been newer releases so this is some documentation on how to extract your own in future.

Requirements

You’ll need 7-Zip which is free and open source, though WinRAR and similar alternatives may also work. (If you’ve just installed the package, run it once so that it sets up the right file and context menu associations).

Step 1. Download Boot Camp

Go to Apple’s Mac OS Components page (I found this through Apple’s Boot Camp page and the Downloads link).

As of 4 Jan 2011 there is one direct link that has both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. Boot Camp Software Update 3.3.

Step 2. Extract the executable

You’ll now have an executable file which is actually an archive. You can extract this like any other compressed file, right clicking it and using 7-Zip / “Extract files to…”.

Inside that extracted directory is .rsrc\0\MSP_RESOURCE and two files, UPDATE32 and UPDATE64 respectively. These are also archives that can be unzipped with 7-Zip again.
BootCampUpdate32.msp or BootCampUpdate64.msp. That’s another archive, extract that to its own directory using 7-Zip again.

Inside there, is a directory like BootCamp3261aToBootCamp3260a, and inside there is Binary.AppleWirelessMouse_Bin, which another archive. Extract that, and run DPInst to install the drivers.

Step 3. Pair the mouse and install the drivers

There is some argument over the right order to install the driver, whether pairing it to your PC first or installing the drivers first. I doubt it matters, but I’d suggest pairing and then installing.

The PIN for pairing will be 0000, and it can be done in the Bluetooth Control Panel. After that run the Mouse Installer.exe (or whatever else you renamed it to), and that should be all you need. Otherwise see the Uneasy Silence page above for some other ideas.

Notes

On Windows 7 with a mini bluetooth adapter, up and down scrolling appears to work fine. Horizontal scrolling, swiping, zooming, and other multitouch gestures don’t appear to work though.

I’ve also seen it installed on Asus eeePC running Windows XP and it worked except for the scrolling. Other people on XP have reported it may or may not work. It might have something to do with which Bluetooth stack is used, but that’s a guess.

This is my new, must-see show!

Notes

As per my previous entries, I struggled to come up with a set this week, and ended up putting together a sick deadpan sarcasm show, which is probably my favourite kind of humour. It went awesome! I think this is my most successful night so far if you were to measure it by loud, consistent laughs throughout the whole set, and comments from the audience and other comedians after the show.

But it was also more difficult. It didn’t all fall together until the day before, so I didn’t have much time to practice. And despite being a similar length and word count to a normal set, it had 3x as many bits and tags, which made it hell to memorise, especially given my nervousness to perform it.

Amazingly the last bit was the funniest, which I felt was the bit most likely to fall flat. Only 2 or 3 one-liners fell flat, but the next laugh was so close around the corner nobody noticed except me. On the downside, I normally learn a lot of things to improve, and after this performance I didn’t learn much except that it worked great as is.

I’d like to perform this one again soon and see what happens with a different audience. I was talking with Ardun Ward about doing a street show. If any other comedians want to join in, let me know.

As for my next official set, I’m not sure if it will be deadpan too, because I can’t work out if this set have worked if I had done it normally. Was it that funny, or was the deadpan what sold it?

Preparing for tonight’s show

July 6th, 2010

I had put together a set list for tonight but it just didn’t flow like my previous acts and because so much material was related to porn, I felt like it didn’t represent me properly as a comedian or a person. So I scrapped it.

I started working on a second set list based on a retrospective of my life now that I’ve turned 30. I got half way through and I liked it but it sounded more like a biography than something funny to act out on stage. So I scrapped that too.

But somehow I managed to mix the two together into a coherent sequence of thoughts and, by accident, worked out a way to deliver them as deadpan. Up to now I’ve only delivered the odd tag as deadpan, but this is taking the whole set list to the extreme.

While I was practicing last night I broke out into laughter because I imagined people laughing and thought it was that hilarious. That doesn’t happen very often (repetition makes it lose the spark)!

I feel so excited to go try this tonight, whereas before I was really dreading going up. I feel like this humour reflects more of my true personal thoughts and opinions, which is exciting for me because I’m trying hard to make my comedy more authentic to my natural sense of humour (if I have one).

With that said I’m now terrified it’s going to bomb completely, because it’s so different to what I’ve done in the past and people who’ve seen me before might be lost and not be able to cross that gulf with me. Deadpan brings with it (in my head, at least) the risk of being boring. I’m imagining a few people leaving through the set right now.

But I think (and hope so bad) that some people will get it. Here goes everything!
